Guilin University of Electronic Technology is located in Guilin, a world-renowned tourist city and a historical and cultural city in China. It is a collaborative university built by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology and the People's Government of Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, as well as by the National Defense Science and Technology Industry Bureau and the People's Government of Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region. It is also one of the universities selected for the national "Higher Education Capacity Building Project in Central and Western China."

The university is one of the four electronic science and technology universities in China, founded in 1960. In 1980, it was officially established as Guilin Electronic Industry College, and in 2006 it was renamed Guilin University of Electronic Technology. The university has been affiliated with various ministries, including the Ministry of Fourth Machinery Industry, the Ministry of Electronics, the Ministry of Mechanical and Electronic Engineering, the China Electronics Corporation, and the Ministry of Information Industry. In 2000, its management system transitioned to a cooperative model involving both central and local governments, with the local government taking the lead in management. In 1990, Jiang Zemin, then General Secretary of the Communist Party of China, visited the university and personally inscribed the words, "To cultivate more qualified talents for the development of the electronic industry." The university has consistently been awarded the title of “National Civilized Campus.”

The university offers 74 undergraduate programs, including 23 national-level first-class professional construction sites, 19 programs certified through engineering education (including 1 industry certification from the Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development), 1 pilot program for national comprehensive reform, and 5 national-level characteristic programs. Currently, there are 15 national-level first-class undergraduate courses, 1 national-level ideological and political demonstration course, and a total of 7 national-level quality courses, national-level bilingual teaching demonstration courses, national-level quality resource sharing courses, and national-level quality online open courses. The university has produced 9 nationally planned textbooks during the 11th and 12th Five-Year Plans and has received 8 national-level teaching achievement awards in higher education. It currently offers 8 doctoral programs in first-level disciplines, 1 category of authorized doctoral professional degrees, 4 postdoctoral research stations, 21 first-level master's degree programs, and 12 categories of authorized master's professional degrees, and it is a university that offers exemptions for master's degree recommendations. The disciplines of Engineering, Materials Science, Computer Science, and Chemistry are ranked in the top 1% globally by ESI.
